Coolship Season
We received a very special delivery at the brewery this week: 50(!) 70-gallon French oak puncheons for our Barrel Room. These barrels add an additional 3,500 gallons of space to store the wide range of coolship beers we have planned over the next couple of months. (If you don’t know about our one-of-a-kind coolship, you can read up on it here.)
Coolship beers take a lot of work and patience to create an unrivaled depth of flavor and funk. We’ll be pumping a near constant stream of beer into the coolship over the next several months and filling the puncheons with wild, one-off beers that will sit in wait for a year or even longer.
Since the coolship collects any bacteria and funk from the area it’s in, we figured it’s time to move it around a bit and collect all the flavors Minnesota has to offer. So far, we’re planning on putting the coolship in our courtyard, driving it out into the Minnesota wilderness, and a whole bunch of other funky fun to create truly wild beers to store in our new oak barrels.
Whether those beers will be ready in one year or five isn’t up to us. Depending on what funk the coolship picked up, the beer will develop at its own rate and let us know when it’s ready. We’ll just have to be patient. We know it’s hard to wait, but we have some good news to help tide you over. We’ll be releasing our first coolship beer at the 2nd Annual Festival of Oak in October! Stay tuned for more details on the festival and that glorious beer.
In the meantime, keep an eye on our barrel room to see the coolship in action as we work hard to fill up all of the new barrels with wild and exciting beers.
