Forgotten Barrel Society: Kreik
It’s time for our second Forgotten Barrel Society bottle release: a kriek-style lambic fermented with Montmorency cherries. This traditional Belgian sour was blended from a variety of barrel-aged coolship beer that was spontaneously fermented during the fall of 2016.
The final barrels were racked by blending various handpicked coolship beers together to balance the cherries’ acidity and sweet fruit flavor. More than 40 pounds of cherries were then added to the barrels to age for eight weeks before being bottled. The bottles aged horizontally for another eight weeks to allow the beer to naturally condition in the bottle for added depth and flavor.
Kriek-style beers are known for a great balance of sweet and tart and our first ever release of this classic style does exactly that. The cherries’ sweet, natural acidity pairs perfectly with the tart base beer, resulting in an easy drinking, inviting lambic with a crisp, light finish.
Forgotten Barrel Society members can pick up their bottle (included with membership) at the Tasting Room on Saturday, March 24.
